#45 Hidden

A shot ran out in the dark.

Two pairs of wide terrified eyes stared at one another. It had sounded close. Too close for them to risk speaking. Too close to risk breaking from their hiding place.

They were both thinking the same thing

“Did they get Heidi?”

She had been gone too long, hours it seemed.  There had been no scream though; perhaps that was cause for hope.

In the darkness they strained their ears to hear a sound… any sound.

At first, nothing but the wind through the trees, then a twig cracking under someone’s foot.

Just outside.
